The Betfred British Masters will return to Close House, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 2020 with former world No.1 Lee Westwood becoming the first player to host the European Tour tournament twice. Following the success of this year’s event at Hillside Golf Club in Southport, where Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood took on the hosting duties, Westwood will reprise the role from July 30 to August 2, 2020, at Close House, the venue he has been attached to as a touring professional for eight years. Close House previously hosted the British Masters in 2017, when Ireland’s Paul Dunne produced a spectacular finish, chipping in on the last hole to finish three shots clear of four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.

England’s Lily May Humphreys adds the Wales title to her growing collection. The WelshWomen’s Open Strokeplay Championship has been won by Lily May Humphreys, as she continued her remarkable winning streak. The 17-year-old secured her first Welsh title in impressive style with a four-shot victory, her closest competitor being her England teammate, Bel Wardle. Humphreys, from Stoke-by-Nayland in Essex, added the trophy at Royal St David’s to no less than five other victories in English, Scottish, British, European and American championships, taking her to the top of the amateur game.

THE KERRY CUP is the biggest corporate event of the year for Branston Golf &Country Club and, despite a downpour of rain, combined with thunder and lightning, it was still a massive success. 120 golfers from across the Midlands competed, making up 30 teams from businesses to the club that is well-renowned for its challenging water hazards.

JAMES SUGRUE savoured success on home soil to win the 124th Amateur Championship at Portmarnock and, as a result, punched his ticket for a dream spot at the Masters in 2020.
