CELEBRITY GOLF DAY RAISES OVER £20,000 FOR WORTHY CAUSE

Thousands raised for the Matt Hampson Foundation after celebrity golf day at The Springs Golf Club.

A host of sporting stars took part in the second Springs Legends 18-hole Texas Scramble tournament, raising over £20,000 for charity in the process.

Former England cricketers Phil DeFreitas and Nick Compton, Olympic gold medal-winning rower Greg Searle, and rugby players Max Evans, Paul Doran-Jones, Louis Deacon, Chris Wyles and Freddie Tuilagi were among the 18 teams who took part in the tournament, which saw £20,440 raised for the Matt Hampson Foundation. The charity provides assistance to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for young individuals who have sustained catastrophic injuries through sport or other physical recreational activities. The money raised was made up of entry fees and a raffle, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Tommy Cawston, CEO of the Matt Hampson Foundation, who took part in the tournament, said: “I’m delighted that so much money was raised for the foundation. It will be invaluable in our work as we continue to help those whose lives have been so drastically altered through injury. I’d like to thank Darwin Escapes for organising and hosting such a terrific event and also thank all the players who participated and helped to raise such a staggering amount.”

Olympic gold medal-winning rower Searle added: “I was delighted to be asked to participate in the tournament. The Matt Hampson Foundation is a wonderful charity which does amazing work helping people to rebuild their lives.

“It was a great day of golf and to have raised over £20,000 is just phenomenal.” Lindsey Esse, managing director of Darwin Escapes, which operates The Springs, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome to The Springs the sporting legends and all of the teams who participated. We have had wonderful feedback and the whole team here is incredibly proud to have played a part in raising such a large amount for a very deserving cause.”
