Bunkers Golf Society, a Liverpool-based society formed in 2012 by a group of friends, believes that golf societies will continue to change the face of golf.
“Golf is an expensive sport and a lot of people are put off by that,” Andy Roper, chairman of Bunkers Golf Society, told UK Club Golfer. “Golf costs a lot of money and this is where societies can fill up that affordability gap for people. You have the option now to group together, form a society and build up a relationship with multiple different clubs in the local area, rather than being restricted to paying lots of money for one club membership.
“I think it’s definitely something that’s growing because it’ll only continue to grow with the handicap changes.”
Roper believes that societies, including his own, offer a lot more than just value for money and outlined the benefits that joining a society can bring.
“The health benefits of getting out on the golf course regularly makes the point for itself. It’s great for you physically and, obviously, mental health is the big thing at the minute too and golf can help with that. The camaraderie and just the fact you can get out on the course with friends is fantastic for keeping up with people. I would encourage anyone to join a society for this reason.”
Bunkers Golf Society has become a prominent name within the golf society world since it was formed nine years ago. The well-oiled operation at the society mimics that of a professional body rather than a group of friends playing golf with each other every weekend but Roper says this is the reason they have been so successful.
“As a result of our serious approach to creating a society, where we almost treat it like a golf club, we have built up a good relationship with local clubs and support them financially.”
