The former schoolteacher began volunteering as a junior organiser at Walmer&Kingsdown, where he has been a member for 24 years, when his own son Ed first started playing golf and Cannons went on to become Kent boys’ manager as part of his work for the Kent Golf Union.
Cannons, who plays off an 11-handicap, now manages the U18 South East boys’ squad.
After receiving his award, he said: “I really enjoy being a squad manager because it means I am dealing with young people with a passion for the game.
“They’re just lovely people who want to play golf and hit that little white ball as far as they can.”
Among the players who have come under Cannons’ wing are Jensen Hull, from Hever Castle Golf Club, who earlier this year reached the semi-finals of the British Boys’ Amateur Championship.
England Golf coach Ryan Fenwick, who has worked alongside Cannons for four years, added: “Paul tirelessly dedicates his time to help support young people up and down the country in their quest to become better at the game of golf and, without people like Paul, it wouldn’t be possible to run our highly successful county and national programmes for all.”
