RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS AT BRANSTON’S BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR

120 golfers from across the Midlands compete for the Kerry Cup.

THE KERRY CUP is the biggest corporate event of the year for Branston Golf &Country Club and, despite a downpour of rain, combined with thunder and lightning, it was still a massive success.

120 golfers from across the Midlands competed, making up 30 teams from businesses to the club that is well-renowned for its challenging water hazards.

Fears that the tournament would have to be abandoned arose during a torrential downpour that reduced visibility almost completely and left most of the course flooded.

This resulted in players being called in as a safety precaution because thunder and lightning was in the area, but thankfully the sunshine returned and the course was ready to resume only an hour later.

Although most competitors were based locally, former Branston member Ray Maginley brought four teams north to visit the club.

Branston Golf Club’s Kerry Cup 2019 winners were the Darley team of Roy Slight, Stewart Hughes, Julian and Masie Smith, with a score of 92.

“This year’s impressive entry Kerry Cup showcased our splendidly challenging championship course,” said Tom Storrar, the golf manager at Branston.

“It has been transformed by our talented greenkeeping team, led by Gavin Robson and supported by almost £250,000 of investment in new maintenance machinery.

“Those who’d played here were amazed by the superb condition of the course now, particularly the speed and trueness of our greens.”

The event is aimed at businesses bringing their best clients and suppliers for a golfing day at Branston, which involves an 18-hole Stableford competition with maximum handicaps of 24 for men and 32 for ladies.

Main sponsors TL Darby Volkswagen displayed their new VW models and also ran a short game putting challenge, which was a highlight of the week.

Other sponsors included Molson Coors, Dedicated Solutions and Nestle, making up a total prize fund of £1,500.

Storrar added: “Thanks to our splendid support from our sponsors with a bumper prize table worth £1,500, together with the hard work of our golf staff, we’re delighted with the success of this year’s Kerry Cup.”
