Scottish Am champ McIntosh eyes return to pro scene

Former tour professional Euan McIntosh had a day to remember as he defeated teenager Jamie Stewart in the final of the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship at Blairgowrie.

The 49-year-old only dropped one shot over 34 holes, which included nine birdies and an eagle, as he took down Stewart – 31 years his junior – 3&2 in a high quality final.

Renfrewshire’s Stewart managed ten birdies and an eagle himself but his six dropped shots were the difference between the two players.

“It feels amazing,” said McIntosh. “It hasn’t sunk in. At 49-years-old, to win this championship is great. The plan is to turn professional once again and have a go at the senior tour next year. I turn 50 in February and qualifying in America is in November.”

McIntosh was quick to pay tribute to Scottish Golf national coach Ian Rae, who the Turnhouse man said played such a huge part in his victory.

“I tell you this right now, I would not have won my second-round match had I not spoken to Ian,” he continued. “He gave me a tip that transformed the way I play matchplay, because I haven’t performed well in matchplay since I came back in 2016.

“He basically told me to stop focusing on what my opponent was doing, forget what they have done, focus on what you can control, and that is what I did over every shot from then on.”

Runner-up Stewart, of Old Course Ranfurly, played superbly in the final and was gracious in defeat.

“I’m gutted to have lost the final today, I just didn’t have my best stuff,” he said. “Congratulations to Euan, who was a deserving winner in the end and I wish him all the best for the future.”

While McIntosh harbours hopes of teeing it up on the senior circuit next year, next up for Stewart is a return to the University of Missouri to complete his college education.
