SCOTLAND was eventually crowned Senior Men’s Home Internationals champions at Southerness after a prevailing in an event that was disrupted by Storm Ali. After losing the second day’s play due to the extreme weather conditions, a change to the original format was agreed, with two sessions taking place on the final day, consisting of seven head-to-head battles. This ensured all three country-versus-country matches were played.
In the round-robin, Scotland, England and Ireland all won two out of three matches. It meant the title was decided on the most match points scored across all three matches and that was where the Scots came to the fore. “We played very well today,” said Scotland captain Ian Brotherston. “We were undefeated in 13 of the 14 matches and the whole team did themselves very proud.”
