MONTE REI, which is consistently rated as the best golf course in Portugal and in the top-ten in Europe, is seeing an increase in demand from discerning US golfers following the Ryder Cup.
Darren Griffiths, the resort’s Director of Golf, said that hosting the Ryder Cup at Le Golf National had “created a lot of interest” with the US golf market and that the Portuguese hotspot was reaping the benefits.
“Many players come over each summer to experience the historical English and Scottish courses, but after seeing play in Paris, they are now also looking at the best golf clubs across Europe,” said Griffiths.
“As Monte Rei is continuously highly rated, with our Jack Nicklaus Signature course, we are benefiting from the Ryder Cup legacy, with bookings already substantially up for 2019.”
Griffiths also believes the relative strength of the US dollar is contributing to the attractiveness of European golf. “A weak euro in relation to the greenback makes our course very good value. US visitors now know they can get great golf on beautiful courses with superb weather at an attractive price. Europe is now very appealing and we are seeing great golfers booking two or three different clubs across Europe as part of a ‘grand’ tour. If they base themselves with us, in the eastern-Algarve, they are short flights away from five or six other countries. Portugal is a great venue and incredible value for golfers,” he added.
As US-based golf enthusiasts search for the leading courses in Europe, for both property and membership opportunities, the eastern Algarve is proving to be an idyllic location for those seeking an all year round exclusive golf experience. Monte Rei is confident in the quality of golf in Europe and will continue to invest in the course and properties available to ensure those transatlantic golf enthusiasts are continuing to see high quality golfing destinations that are worth investing in.
“Before the Ryder Cup, we had steady interest from golfers across the US, but having seen what Europe has to offer there is now real enthusiasm to play in mainland Europe. We are set-up for all American golfers, from helping with getting their equipment around Europe to offering the best in five-star accommodation.”
