Research reveals overwhelming optimism for the future of grassroots golf

With golf now well and truly back underway, we’re sure that you’ve seen with your own eyes the surge of golfers heading for the tees. It’s great news for the sport and now new research by golf insurance specialist, Golf Care, reveals exactly what the impact of lockdown has been for over 4,000 golfers in the UK.

The return to golf

It’s fair to say that golf made a more than welcome return in May and the greens have been packed ever since. In fact, 97% of golfers surveyed said they had returned to the course since lockdown, which is unsurprising. However, 86% said they were playing either as frequently or more so, which provides great optimism for the future of the game.

When asked about the new guidelines that have been implemented to keep golfers safe, 96% of those surveyed said they have found them easy to follow. And 8 in 10 think their club has communicated the new rules well.

After a couple of months off, there was a fair share of wayward first tee shots with 46% of golfers feeling rusty or very rusty when they returned to the course.

Attracting new players to the game

Perhaps even better news than the number of golfers who’ve returned to the course, is the fact that the sport is now attracting a new audience. 52% of people surveyed said they’d noticed more non-members on the course since lockdown with 77% feeling positive about the increase.

A further 37% of those questioned said they were confident that the post-lockdown era would open the door for a new generation of golfers. The sport’s governing body, England Golf, are working hard to encourage new interest in the sport, launching a new campaign to help increase the number of memberships following the increased participation. Long may this surge in interest continue!

Accidents on the course can happen at any time

From mis-hit shots to broken equipment, there’s a lot that can go wrong during your round, something we know all about as a specialist golf insurer. We’ve all hit a wayward shot.  It happens to the best of players, but they could cost you a small fortune. One UK golfer was awarded £397k after being hit by a wayward shot. Something that Public Liability insurance will protect you from paying out on yourself.

You’ve also got your clubs and equipment to consider too. You’ve probably spent a small fortune to get the right set up for you and accidental damage claims are what we see most often. One policyholder’s golf GPS watch flew off their wrist during a backswing and landed on a gravel path, cracking the screen – an expensive replacement had they not been insured!

The ever-increasing need for specialist golf insurance

It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned golfer or are new to the game. With more people on the course since lockdown, the need for insurance has never been greater and playing without it simply isn’t worth the risk.

With specialist insurance from Golf Care, you can be covered for all of this when you buy annual golf insurance from just £24.49 a year:
