Members of farming golf society celebrate founder’s 90th birthday

Gwyn Evans set up the Glamorgan Farmers’ Golf Society back in 1985 and it has since raised more than £50,000 for local charities

A SOCIETY FOUNDER and has been recognised by his fellow members after recently celebrating his 90th birthday.

Gwyn Evans, a life member of the Glamorgan Farmers’ Golf Society, had the vision back in 1985 to set up a golf society to enable farmers and those with farming connections in the Welsh region to meet once a month throughout the year to play a round of golf.

Since then, the society – under Evans’ stewardship – has gone from strength to strength with over 100 different courses played. During that time, the society has also raised more than £50,000 for various local charities and has a proud record of never once failing to play its monthly competition.

The most recent monthly meeting of the society took place at Raglan Parc Golf Club, attracting 33 participants, all of whom were trying to win one of the many quality prizes supplied by the day’s generous sponsor, Brian Lakin of Sigma3 Kitchens and Bathrooms.

For many, this was their first visit to the parkland course with the society’s only other visit back in 1996.

Following a very enjoyable afternoon’s golf played in perfect conditions, just two points separated the top four at the conclusion of play.

Leading the field with 34 stableford points was first-time winner Julian Golunski, followed by runner-up Aubrey Bowen and Robbie Llewellyn who both scored 33 points. Hugh Williams finished in fourth place with 32 points.

The visitors’ section was even more keenly contested with both Peter Francis (Pencoed) and Andrew Lamb finishing with 33 points.

Nearest the pin on the Watts & Morgan sponsored par-3 holes were Hugh Williams, Aubrey Bowen, Leighton Griffiths and Gareth Perkins, while Clive Edwards – despite getting lost on the course together with playing partners Aubrey Bowen and Charles Vicary – was ecstatic when realising he had hit the longest drive down the 18th fairway to win the Llanerch Vineyard and Restaurant-sponsored prize.

Forty-seven golf balls failed to make the journey back to the Vale, a number correctly guessed by secretary Tony McCarthy, who returned home with a voucher courtesy of Picketston Poultry.

In total, £130 was raised for the Velindre Hospital’s ‘Closer to Home’ appeal fund set up by the day’s sponsor Brian Lakin. On the previous day, Lakin had welcomed the Princess Royal to officially open a recently purchased state-of-the-art mobile chemotherapy unit paid for by the fundraising undertaken by Brian and his hard working committee which, to date, has raised a staggering £2.18million pounds.
